New Westminster from Opposite, 1896

March 4, 2012
New Westminster Panorama from Opposite the City

This panoramic view of New Westminster from opposite the city  dates from the same time period as the Creech lithograph, “City of New Westminster Before the Fire,” and features the same shack and meadows on the south bank of the Fraser River.  The picture shown here is from two photos in the Vancouver Archives, P248.1 and P248.2, dated about 1896.

The same view appeared in the British Columbian newspaper:

‘View of Section Destroyed by Great Fire’

Columbian panorama of New Westminster limits of fire

‘This illustration, if somewhat disfigured, is interesting as a relic of the Great Fire of 1898.  The view is from across the Fraser.  The fire, commencing at the waterfront, swept the whole district bounded by the white line drawn on the picture.’
